Candidates must have passed the Secondary School Examination (10th standard) with passing marks in Mathematics and English from a recognized Board of School Education in India. Candidates must have studied the local language of the Circle at least up to 10th standard. The minimum age is 18 years and maximum age is 40 years, subject to applicable category-wise relaxations.

GDS employees are paid Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA). The initial TRCA slab is โน12,000โโน29,380 for Branch Postmaster (BPM) and โน10,000โโน24,470 for Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)/Dak Sevak. TRCA carries an annual increase of 3%, subject to fulfilment of prescribed conditions. GDS are also entitled to Dearness Allowance and other applicable allowances and social security benefits.
